For the second example, you are going to remove the Did you know block again, but this time you are only going to edit a phtml file. Callouts for both the left and right column can be found in the same location. To edit either the left or right callouts, navigate to app design frontend default default template callouts. For this example, you will be editing the left_col.phtml since you are working with the left column. If you still have the developer template path hints you will notice that the block is gone, but there is still a template reference to the left callout. This exists because there is still a reference in the catalog.xml file you were working with in the previous section. Even though this shows up with the template path hints still turned on, the next block Popular Tags will appear flush with the title About Magento Demo Store.

The popitem method is similar to list.pop. Unlike list.pop, however, popitem pops off a random item because dictionaries don t have a last element or any order whatsoever. This may be very useful if you want to remove and process the items one by one in an efficient way (without retrieving a list of the keys first): >>> d {'url': 'http://www.python.org', 'spam': 0, 'title': 'Python Web Site'} >>> d.popitem() ('url', 'http://www.python.org') >>> d {'spam': 0, 'title': 'Python Web Site'} Although popitem is similar to the list method pop, there is no dictionary equivalent of append. Because dictionaries have no order, such a method wouldn t make any sense.

Because our database doesn t contain anything yet, we start by creating the initial schema. Sample Data: This file is optional and is only required if you want to install sample data to your initial installation of Magento. Sample data is not included with either the downloader or full release. If you have never worked with Magento before, it is highly recommended that you install sample data.

The setdefault method is somewhat similar to get, except that in addition to the get functionality, setdefault sets the value corresponding to the given key if it is not already in the dictionary:

Not only did this single command create a model class file for the Author model, but it also created a skeleton for unit tests for that class and a new migration file, 001_create_authors.rb. The number 001 at the beginning of the filename means that we re talking about the first migration for this application.

Another thing that can slow down rendering is building the URLs in link_to and form helpers. If your profiling shows that a url_for call is taking a lot of time, you might consider replacing the helper with a handwritten HTML tag. So, for example <%= link_to "Home", home_url %> would be replaced by <a href="/">Home</a>. However, remember to measure and profile. It serves no purpose to optimize these helpers unless you see that they are guilty of slowing down your application.
