Setting up at least one shipping method is an essential part of running an eCommerce store. Before you set up a shipping method you need to take a look at Shipping Settings. Inside of System Configuration, select Shipping Settings from the menu on the left. First up is the Origin configuration, this information is used for both the UPS and FedEx online shipping calculators. This address should be the same as where you will be shipping your products from to give as accurate shipping quotes as possible. The second section called options let s you enable or disable shipping to multiple addresses and control the maximum number of addresses customer can ship to. While customers are allowed to ship to multiple addresses, keep in mind that each unique address is treated as an unique order number and transaction. Customers also have the ability to select different payment methods per each unique address during checkout.

In this section, we ll show you how to translate the book catalog we created in 4. We ll translate the view and then the Book model.

Magento comes pre-installed with several different shipping methods, including table rate shipping, flat rate shipping, UPS, FedEx, and USPS. If any of these shipping methods do not meet the needs of your store, you can visit http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect and search for additional shipping method extensions (see Figure 8-7).

To prepare a view for translation, you need to change the text to a Ruby string, surround it with <%= %>, and append a call to .translate (or its alias .t) to the string. For example, to prepare the text Type a question for help for translation from the base language to other languages, change it to this: <%= 'Type a question for help'.t %>

Strings are values, just like numbers are: >>> "Hello, world!" 'Hello, world!' There is one thing that may be a bit surprising about this example, though: When Python printed out our string, it used single quotes, whereas we used double quotes. What s the difference Actually, there is no difference: >>> 'Hello, world!' 'Hello, world!' Here, too, we use single quotes, and the result is the same. So why allow both Because in some cases it may be useful: >>> "Let's go!" "Let's go!" >>> '"Hello, world!" she said' '"Hello, world!" she said' In the preceding code, the first string contains a single quote (or apostrophe, as we should perhaps call it in this context), and therefore we can t use single quotes to enclose the string. If we did, the interpreter would complain (and rightly so): >>> 'Let's go!' SyntaxError: invalid syntax Here, the string is 'Let', and Python doesn t quite know what to do with the following s (or the rest of the line, for that matter). In the second string, we use double quotes as part of our sentence. Therefore, we have to use single quotes to enclose our string, for the same reasons as stated previously. Or, actually

Configing shipping settings Once you ve got your settings correct for origin and shipping to multiple addresses, you need to set up at least one shipping method for customers to use during checkout. By default, Flat Rate is the only shipping method that is enabled. To view this method and the other shipping methods that are available, select Shipping Methods from the menu on the left (see Figure 8-8).

Note Globalize inserts a new record into the database (the base language text) for each string that is appended with a .t (or .translate) method call when that particular code is executed. Code that is located inside an if statement that doesn t get executed won t be inserted into the database.

A very important string method, split is the inverse of join, and is used to split a string into a sequence: >>> '1+2+3+4+5'.split('+') ['1', '2', '3', '4', '5'] >>> '/usr/bin/env'.split('/') ['', 'usr', 'bin', 'env'] >>> 'Using the default'.split() ['Using', 'the', 'default'] Note that if no separator is supplied, the default is to split on all runs of consecutive whitespace characters (spaces, tabs, newlines, and so on). Figure 8-8. Modifying the default shipping method Flat rate is the shipping method that is enabled by default when you install your Magento store. Flat rate basically means that you set a flat rate of shipping either per item or per order. You can change the amount, and even include a handing free. Handling fees are not itemized and are included with the total shipping cost. If you do not want to use Flat rate as your shipping method, you will need to select no from the Enabled drop down and enable another shipping method listed below.
