First, we will jump-start the implementation of this requirement by using the generate script. The generate script can be used for quickly creating boilerplate code for controllers, models, and views or more complex functionality through third-party generators created by the Ruby on Rails community. The generated code usually requires modification to fit your requirements. Using pop, you can implement a common data structure called a stack. A stack like this works just like a stack of plates. You can put plates on top, and you can remove plates from the top. The last one you put into the stack is the first one to be removed. (This principle is called Last-In, First-Out, or LIFO.)

What s an eCommerce store without customers Customers are an essential part of running an eCommerce-based store. Whether it s updating order information, managing customer groups, creating additional tax classes, or creating new customers, Magento provides the resources that allow you to provide customer interaction and management. While issues such as conversion rates, discounts, and product promotions are important customer issues, we ll leave those issues up to you and your clients to decide which methods work best for your store.

The generate script created a controller, view, helper, and a functional test for us. The controller has one action, index, which is called by default if no action is specified. Next, open http://localhost:3000/about in your browser. You should see the About page we just created, as shown in Figure 1-3.

While customers have the ability to register an account before they move to the checkout process, during the checkout process, customers can checkout as guests. The guest checkout process works exactly the same as a normal checkout process with the exception that customers who check out as a guest will not have their information stored in the Magento database. While this does add an additional level of privacy for customers, it automatically excludes them from receiving your store s newsletter (see Figure 6-1).

The generally accepted names for the two stack operations (putting things in and taking them out) are push and pop. Python doesn t have push, but you can use append instead. The pop and append methods reverse each other s results, so if you push (or append) the value you just popped, you end up with the same stack: >>> >>> >>> [1, x = [1, 2, 3] x.append(x.pop()) x 2, 3]

The About page generated by Rails The About#index is computer-generated text, and the layout is ugly, so in the next section, we will spend some time modifying the code to fit our requirements. As we told you earlier, the generate script creates a functional test and a helper class. In our case, we will not use the functional test or the helper. In later chapters, we will teach you how to use the test-driven development technique to write not only functional tests, but also unit and integration tests.

Guests will need to either register if they make a second purchase with your store or checkout as a guest again. If this is not a feature you want to use on your site, you will need to disable customer checkout by navigating to System Configuration. Once the configuration page has loaded, look for Checkout underneath Sales on the left-hand side. Under the Checkout Options Header, there is a drop down menu called Allow Guest Checkout, select No from the drop down and click save config in the upper-right hand corner (see Figure 6-2).

Tip Helpers are useful for keeping your views clean and readable. Views shouldn t contain complex logic

Tip If you want a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) queue, you can use insert(0, ...) instead of append. Alternatively, you could keep using append but substitute pop(0) for pop(). An even better solution would be to use a deque from the collections module. See 10 for more information.

If you have multiple Magento stores, you adjust this setting under the Current Configuration Scope in the upper left-hand corner, for each individual site.
